Info window: Working with icons

File Buddy offers several methods for working with icons of items being viewed in an Info window.

The simplest way to add a custom icon for an item is to drag something from which File Buddy can create an icon to the item’s icon in the Info window. Any of the following can be dragged to create an icon:

Drag a graphics file to create an icon from the image in the file.
Drag any other item from the Finder to copy that item’s icon.

Control-click the icon of an item in the Info window, or click the small triangle to the right of the icon, to bring up the Icon pop-up menu. The menu contains the following items:

Help

Open the help in Help Viewer to the page discussing the icon well.

Cut

Put the displayed item’s icon family on the Clipboard, and, if the icon was a custom icon, remove it from the item.

Copy

Put the displayed item's icon family on the Clipboard.

Paste

If the Clipboard contains any data that be turned into an icon, assign that data as the displayed item's custom icon, replacing any existing custom icon.

Clear

If the displayed item has a custom icon, remove it.

View Icon Family

Open a window displaying all available icon formats and sizes for the current icon.

Export Icon To File…

Save the current icon as a .icns file.

Create Icon From Image

Create a custom icon from the image in the current file. This item is only available if the current item is a QuickTime-compatible graphics file.

Use Blank Icon

Give the displayed item a custom icon that is completely blank. Only the item's name will be shown in the Finder. If the item has an existing custom icon, it will be replaced.

Use Same Icon As…

Create a custom icon based on the icon of another file or folder.

File Buddy does not provide any mechanism for manually creating or editing icon data. Such an endeavor requires the use of image editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop™, or software designed specially for editing icons.
